First ever virtual, online holding of the 23rd Bucheon International Comics Festival

The Bucheon International Comics Festival (hereinafter, “Comics Festival,” Operation Chairman Cho Gwan-je), Korea’s largest comics festival, will be held completely online, non-face-to-face, in coming September.

The Comics Festival, celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year, will be held on the Comics Festival homepage ( and various SNS channels for 9 days from September 19 (Sat) to 27 (Sun) starting with a virtual opening ceremony without spectators.

The schedule of the Comics Festival, which had been originally held during the week of National Liberation Day in August every year, moved to September to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and all offline events were cancelled. Accordingly, the first-ever online Comics Festival will be held, providing with programs that anyone can enjoy online, regardless of time and space.

The two main attractions of the festival welcome their spectators on the Comics Festival homepage. The first is a special exhibition on , the grand prize winner of the 2019 Bucheon Manhwa Award and the second is special exhibition on , the grand prize winner of the 2020 Bucheon Manhwa Award. You can see a 360-degree view of the exhibition following the exhibition route. It will enable more realistic appreciation in detail because the images of the exhibited comic works can be enlarged. You can also visit the Comics Festival in games. Spectators will be invited on LAN using Minecraft, the popular online game. There will be a map of the Bucheon International Comics Festival for users to view it online and participate in the comics exhibition and events. The Gyeonggi International Cosplay Festival, which picks the best cosplayer every year, will be held online. “Cosplay@Home” will be divided into overseas and domestic units and held on SNS channels such as YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. Netizens will select the best costume player themselves. In addition, the Companion Animal Cosplay Contest will be held. You can participate by uploading cosplay photos and hashtags of companion animals, and the ones that receive the most “likes” will be selected. Selected as Gyeonggi Tourism’s representative festival for five years in a row, the Bucheon International Comics Festival is Korea’s largest comics festival, where men and women of all ages can enjoy comics, playing a central role in promoting Korean comics with citizens, creators and related-industries’ companies in unison.
